Sunrise Dachshunds is located in beautiful Puerto Rico, a US Territory
in the Carribean off the coast of Florida.
Valerio Hernandez-Colon, right, and Juan Fussa together are Sunrise
Dachshunds.
Val first had his start in dogs showing and breeding Boxers. In
1994 he decided he would like a smaller breed.
His first Dachshund came from Coamex Kennels, well known on the island
for their quality Dachshunds.
"Fabiola" is that first Dachshund's name and she is still with Val and
going strong at 12 years of age. She's officially known as Puerto
Rican, International, Latin American, Las Americas, Caribbean &
1997 World Champion
EJ'sCoamex Red Poinssettia MS. What a mouthful! More
important to Valerio is that she is the dam, granddam and
great-granddam of bench Champions as well as the granddam and
great-granddam of an ever-increasing number of Field Champions in the
United States.
Later on, after Fabiola
finished her show career, she needed to have a companion. Val
started looking around for a nice male and found that Add-Sim's Kennel
was just around the corner in Florida. Cliff Simones and Robbie
Addison, the stewards of Add-Sim's, since have guided Valerio and
helped him with everything he wished or dreamed.
From Cliff and Robbie, Valerio purchased "Charlie", BISS CH Add-Sim's
Good Time Charlie. Charlie was 4 years old and already a finished
Champion, having completed that title as an 8 month old. He was
Val's first Special, winning many Best of Varieties and Best In
Specialty Shows over #1 US dogs in all coats handled exclusively by
Valerio. Charlie produced, and is still producing, many beautiful dogs
that shine in the ring and/or the field in the US, Canada and Puerto
Rico. He is
the sire of #1 Mini Smooth in 2005, Multiple Group Winning CH Sunrise
Valerie MS.
His last win after completing
the requirements for
his ROMX award was Best Stud Dog at the NMDC National Specialty 2005.
Having such an amazing dog as
Charlie meant that he deserved to be bred to outstanding bitches.
Sandy Golemb, of Rosan Hill Dachshunds in Wisconsin, gave Val the
opportunity of breeding to some tightly linebred bitches related to
Fabiola. Those bitches from Sandy have produced many Champions
for Sunrise. At the Dachshund Club of America National Specialty in
1999, Valerio met Guy Jeavons and Mark McMillan from South
Africa. They had just relocated to Canada with some fine
Dachshunds from English and International bloodlines. These dogs
have blended very beautifully with Valerio's American and Canadian
lines.
Sunrise dogs are not just the
ideal of what a correct, useful and beautiful dachshund should be but
also a
tribute to the work of the breeders of their ansestors. Without
the vision of show breeders like Sharon Varty (Pawprints) and Hannelore
Heller (Han-Jo's), among others, miniature Dachshunds would not be what
they are today....little dogs that can go toe to toe with the standards
in both the show ring and the field and finish with a BANG!
